Another landmark in Hyderabd: Solar Cycle Track

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to ride a bike under the Sun, literally? Well, in some parts of the world, this is becoming a reality thanks to solar cycle tracks. These are cycling or walking paths that are covered by solar panels, which provide shade, power, and environmental benefits. In this post, we will explore some of the examples, advantages, and details of these innovative projects.

Solar cycle track

One of the most impressive solar cycle tracks is being planned in Hyderabad, India. It is first of its kind Solar Cycle Track in India. The project will cover a 23-km-long stretch on the Outer Ring Road (ORR) with solar panels that will generate 16 MW of power. The cycle track will be 4.5 metres wide and have lighting, parking and other amenities for cyclists and pedestrians. The foundation stone for the project was laid by the Minister for Municipal Administration and Urban Development KT Rama Rao on September 6, 2022 and it is inaugurated on 15th August 2023.

The Hyderabad solar cycling track project will have many benefits for the city and its people. It will provide clean and renewable energy that can be used for various purposes, such as powering the HMDA buildings and street lights, or selling to the grid. It will also offer shade and protection from rain for the users of the track, making it more comfortable and safe. Moreover, it will reduce the land use conflict between solar farms and other activities, as it will utilize the existing infrastructure and space. And last but not least, it will promote green transportation and healthy lifestyles by encouraging people to use bikes or walk instead of cars.

Hyderabad is not the only place in the world where solar cycle tracks are being developed. In South Korea, there is a 32-km-long cycle track between Daejeon and Sejong that is shaded by solar panels. The panels generate enough electricity to power the highway lights and rest areas along the route. In the Netherlands, there is a 70-meter-long bike path that is paved with solar cells embedded in concrete. The path can produce enough energy to power three households.

Solar cycle tracks are not very common in the world, but they are a great example of how solar energy can be integrated into our daily lives in a creative and efficient way. They show that solar panels are not just for rooftops or fields, but can also be used to enhance our urban spaces and mobility options. Solar cycle tracks are a win-win solution for both the environment and the society, and we hope to see more of them in the future.
